An open letter to Aamir Khan

Dearest Aamiraamir.jpg

I just saw the TZP trailer for the 18th time, and before you release the new trailer, I would have probably watched it at least 40 more times. I watched the Mangal Pandey trailers about 200 times before the film released.

As someone correctly said on your blog, in times where every filmmaker wants his heroes and heroines to wear Prada and Gucci, and wants to shoot his films in nothing less than London and New York (as if Indians in India have no interesting lives), you dare to make a film about children.

You probably know that children-centric films have not had a good time in our industry of late. Nanhe Jaisalmer and Chain Khuli Ki Main Khuli bombed recently. Even the ambitious Raju Chacha with big stars tanked not too long back.

But, of course, when have you thought of all that. Following norms has never been your cup-of-tea.

You made Lagaan when cricket and a period setting were both taboos in our industry.

You worked with Ashutosh Gowarikar when he had 2 flops behind him and was rejected by one and all. You worked with Rakeysh Mehra when he had only a flop Aks in his resume. And on both occasions you made probably the best film in the history of Indian Cinema.

You refused invites from Koffee with Karan, a show celebrities would give their right hand to appear in (or may be the leg as they’d need the hand for Koffee); yet you showed up at some small talk-show at NDTV.

You don’t give interviews to the paparazzi, yet you spend over an hour video chatting with your fans on your website, answering all their questions.

You don’t go for the stupid dime-a-dozen award shows, but you went to voice the misery of the troubled farmers in the Narmada Valley.

While other actors made 3 films a year, you gave 3 years to one film at the height of your carrier.

While other actors are all over the media praising their films and do their best to keep media happy, you did not make a single media appearance before RDB just because you were angry with the media. Wow!

While other actors are endorsing everything from undergarments to hair-oil to chyawanprash, your endorsements can be counted on one finger – 3.

You have been the perennial trend setter of this age. Others followed, but never came close.

You sang ‘Aati Kya Khandala’ which became the anthem of the loafers countrywide. ‘Apun Bola’ (SRK) and ‘Aye Shivani’ (Sanjay Dutt) followed but left were hardly given a second listening.

You went to the border to entertain our soldiers. Others followed suit.

You started the whole trend of ‘looking the part’. Today, every actor seems to want to look different in every movie.

And well, you started a blog. Last I heard there were blogs by Anil Kapoor and SRK.

But in spite of that Aamir, or more appropriately, because of that Aamir, you are truly the country’s greatest superstar. You may not have the label of the ‘King’, or the temples with your statue in it, but you are indeed the greatest force in this industry.

How else would you explain the euphoria that surrounds your mere signing a film?

How else would you explain RDB being a blockbuster without you making a single public appearance for its publicity?

How else would you explain the craze to find out how Aamir Khan looks in his next film?

How else would you explain the fact that the caps, rings, or mufflers you wear grace the apparel stores nationwide? The barbers throughout the country need to learn how to make your current hairstyle if they want to stay in business? The lines you say are probably in the lexicons of every film-loving boy in the country? And the funny part is you never make an effort for any of the three to happen.

Now I hear Aamir that you are shaving your head for your new film. When has that been done before (Akshaye in Salaam-E-Ishq but that wasn’t intentional)? Not in my living memory! The barbers of India would have it easy this time

So Aamir Hussain Khan, take a bow! You are the greatest masterpiece in the museum of the Hindi Film Industry.

In the meantime, I’ll try to go into hypersleep mode as I really can’t wait for December 21, the day I get to see you in a Mohawk on the big screen.

Yours truly

Nitesh a.k.a Bollywood Byter

I would just like to clarify that in Narmada Dam case, Aamir never proposed or opposed the construction of the dam.
Aamir’s stand was simple – a lot of farmers are going to lose their lands as a result of the construction and so the government should compensate these farmers.

    rosh says...

“Indian film industry is where the real Gods lie – Aamir, Bachchan, Rahman, Aishwarya. I believe Bollywood is my religion”

Am curious? Why do you feel or express this way? These so called *Gods* are just people – who make, *make believe* stuff i.e. movies. Please don’t take it to the levels such blind ignorance. There are hundreds and 1000’s of true men & women, who earn peanuts and work their asses off to make the world a safe & better place for all of mankind – you can find these souls, in orphanages, social services, churchs and the tons of charity run organizations. Likewise there are every day people, who toil to make a decent living, inspite of the rough circumstances they face everyday – from morning ruch hour to pressures of work, finances and family – yet find the strength and solitude to smile and live on by the rules.

Spare your words for such *real* people, who truly live their lives – give a moment of thought to another being who, like you, matters.

  • 26

    Nitesh says...

    Dear Rosh
Thanks for commenting. You have raised a very valid question – why have I elevated these artists to the level of God?
Well, one, you have taken my obvious exaggeration too seriously. But well, even if I ignore that, tell me, what is religion for? Isn’t it for faith, for hope?
Doesn’t art give us that? Doesn’t a film like ‘Guru’ give you the strength to never let go of your dream? Doesn’t a Rang De Basanti tell you that even a common man can make a difference? Doesn’t a Lagaan teach you that “such aur sahas hai jiske man mein, ant mein jeet usi ki hai” (he who is truthful and courageous triumphs)? Doesn’t an Andaz Apna Apna make you forget all troubles in life and make you smile, something we all owe to ourselves? Doesn’t a ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ unite us all as Indians and make us proud of our country? Is that not what a religion should teach?
Religion is supposed to unite us but if you look at the state of the world, religion is what is dividing us. Two years back Delhi was bombed on Diwali. This year, Ajmer Sharif was bombed just days before Eid.
Religious differences are shattering us, leaving Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, all in tatters.
Don’t you think that Art is the true religion? Doesn’t it bring us together? It makes us laugh together, it makes us cry together.
When Lagaan brought us laurels, we all united as one to celebrate the success. We never thought that the producer is a Muslim or the Director is a Hindu.
Songs of Rahman have brought us together, be it for the Tsunami cause, the Taj Mahal, or poverty.
As a common Indian who has himself not had a cushy life, I can tell you how much hope art gives you. Life without art would be hard to bear.
The real people that you talk about also derive this hope from cinema. Their lives are just so dreadful that this “make believe” stuff is what keeps them going – a hope, a hope for a better life.
And what makes you feel that these people made it this far easily. These artist that I adore are no different from the *real* people that you talk about.
Rahman was probably 10 when he started working. His family could not afford 2 square meals a day. Look where he is today.
Bachchanji was rejected by AIR and had to work very hard to make it big. Just about 7-8 years back he was bankrupt but, to quote you, he had to work his ass off at the age of almost 60 to get his family out of debt.
Doesn’t that make them *real* in your definition?
Art rosh, I believe, is as close to religion as religion can get, and cinema is a part of that.
I’d rather follow it than any other religion the so-called flag bearers of which are spreading nothing but hatred. The flag bearers of cinema only spread love.
And rosh, I’ll end by saying my love for cinema is not mutually exclusive to my respect for the hard working common man. Just because I don’t have blog for the maid who comes to clean my house doesn’t mean I don’t respect her strength.
Once again, I admire your sentiments. Please preserve your compassion forever.
    God Bless,
    Nitesh

  • 27

    gullu says...

I just want to say one thing “thank you” Nitesh for your powerful and very inspiring comments. How do you come up with such strong and passionate stuff to talk about? It is highly commendable. First of all, your open letter to legendary Aamir Khan is very well put and despite of being a huge bollywood freak, I was surprised of not knowing more than half of the things you mentioned about Aamir Khan. You changed my impression on him. I have always perceived him as an arrogant and snobbish person, but I guess he just prefers being in solitude, away from all those bollywood cliques to do some good deeds and make a good use of his precious times.
And your comment at the end on how art can take place of your faith and hope is so true atleast according to me. No offense to the common man, I have great admiration for them who lends their hand for the betterment of the society we live in. Cinema really is an amazing form of art that teaches you how to
love, laugh and spread love among others.
Lastly to all of you, big pat on your back for keeping this blog so positive and keep at it. Aamir rocks!!!

  • 35

    rosh says...

OK, thanks for that. I am in many minds on a response, so I shall respond as shortly and to the point I can:

“Doesn’t a film like ‘Guru’ give you the strength to never let go of your dream”

We all chase our dreams. Chasing dreams the Guru way and say, my way – is quite different. I’ve always played by the book and do not intend to break laws of trade/commerce and glorify success achieved. I find it amusing and rather unfortunate that, from the land of Gandhi, you’ve come to feel, a silly movie about a guy, who broke the rules of trade – brings more joy and motivation to you in life? See it for what it is, the message wasn’t that you can also become someone in life.

“Doesn’t a Rang De Basanti tell you that even a common man can make a difference?”

Ofcourse it makes a difference, surely not for the positive? Taking lives of any man, even those of corrupt politicians is not correct. I am in such disbelief, that young men & women think it’s OK and *inspiring*, to take law on their own hands and destroy their young lives? You’ve got to let the law (no matter how slow and corrupt it may have become) take it’s course.

“Religion is supposed to unite us but if you look at the state of the world, religion is what is dividing us. Two years back Delhi was bombed on Diwali. This year, Ajmer Sharif was bombed just days before Eid ”

Fanatics exist in every religion. Fanatics do not represent an entire religion and it’s followers. Shiv Sena or Osama *does not* represent all of Hinduism and Islam. I am more spiritual than religious – but I find solace in God, not movies – but then, each to his own.

I understand, music adds that extra patriotism in times of troubles, and perhaps, rightfully so, Rahman’s music has achieved that. I also concur with your views on Rahman and Amitabh. However, I value your maid’s work & perseverance more than Rahman’s and Amitabh’s put together. Her efforts to fend for her family, makes Rahman or Amitabh, quite insignificant in my view.

End of the day, these are all people. If you must pay homage, perhaps also spare a thought to those *behind the scenes* folks, who work tirelessly to support the *Gods* or powers that be.

So you know, my views are purely based on what I have read on your blog (which I inadvertently stumbled upon). I am of Indian origin, but have never lived in India. Most of what I know are thru media and other mediums. So please pardon if my sentiments come across too critical. I am just trying to get a point across, whilst simultaneously trying to grasp yours.

    Keep well

Gr8 Comments by all..except for one silly one..anyways..I am a huge admirer of Aamir Khan and I don’t think I could have written it better..Good Job..Superstars will come and go and get replaced..But there would be just one Aamir Khan in history of Cinema..He has made it the hard way when he had an option to be just another superstar and make as much money as possible..could you guys believe he sacrficed his peak age just for a handful of movies when other actors were doing movies left right and centre along with hundreds of endorsements and dancing in parties and marriages and all crappy award shows..award shows make me laugh honestly..by the end of the year its very difficult to find out who din’t won the award..everyone wins it..and if someone is left out they will create one for him(I am talking about the big ego guys..do I have to name them?)..lol ..hats off to Aamir!!

P.S. Rosh and Nitesh..just take a chill pill guys..Nitesh’s point of view is right..Rosh u r also right..but u r taking everything too literally..now both you guys chill..dont make it like who will hv the last word..both have their point of view.Btw Rosh, Nitesh is just trying to tell that these guys do inspire you at times and I guess they inspire everyone..There are quite a few movies that inspire me a lot..That’s why Cinema is so huge because a viewer ends up identifying something about their lives in movies and we get to see a lot of that in Aamir’s movies. And Nitesh all Rosh is trying to say is a common man who is working as hard but couldnt achieve the money or fame like Aamir is an equal to him..nothing wrong in that..its just that Rosh its very natural to look up to some one who makes it and its very difficult to look upto some one who doesnt..and about all those people working for social causes without much money..hats off to them too..but Rosh don’t you think many people don’t realise the importance of hardships some people are taking for the good of society or country or world and cinema is a medium with which you can make people realise..and there are few guys(like Aamir) who try to attempt to do that..And Cinema does entertain us..entertainment itself is important for our survival..anyways both are right ..its just Nitesh is showing 6 and Rosh is seeing 9..I hope I am making any sense..lol..

  • 37

    Nitesh says...

Hey Guys, thanks for the great comments.
    * Shreyas, I’ll post your keyboard back the day I see a smiling jogger (think about it, have you ever seen one?).

    * Sunshineforlife, you want me to kiss Aamir for you? Erm.. I think he’d be happier if you entrusted some girl with the task.

    * Meghla, Aamirian of the year, wow thanks.. but well in true Aamir tradition, let there be no awards.

    * Rosh, dude I could write another reply explaining my point of view, but I’ll heed to Amit’s advice who has so very nicely volunteered to put an end to this. All I say is that your compassion is commendable and hope you can put it to action to help the underprivileged if you are not already doing so.

    * And Amit, thanks darling, it’s really nice of you to mediate. I like the line “by the end of the year its very difficult to find out who din’t won the award..everyone wins it”. By the way I have a blog entry on award shows, just in case you are interested:

Well its easy to think about someone as so great now that you have expressed it in such words. But friend that essay merely portrays what you think and not what it would really be. For instance you forgot to mention the hype aamir created for fanna by dropping from nowhere into the dam controversy. It was a public stunt for his movie and thats what he has been doin lately, even RDB he didnt need to attend for public meeting because of the animal controversy he created. I would say he was to busy for his marriage to attend any public meeting then. He did do publicity for mangal pandey, fanaa etc. Where is he now wats happenin with the damn does anybody ask now of wats goin on with those people dude. Too blinded by his stardom i wud say

    Bala says...

Gushing. Loads of it. If only you had taken some time to write from the head, this sounds more like it is from the heart. There is very little truth in anything written here. I am a big fan of Aamir, but you have just gotten carried away big time here. A little more brain into this would have made this a good post.

    1. Where is SRK’s blog? Where is Anil’s? Anil started a blog only for Gandhi, nothing more. I guess the other stars are just content to let their work do all the talking.
    2. Poor you, watching Mangal Pandey even once was mind-numbing for me.
    3. Funnily enough, I don’t see any of the euphoria when Aamir signs a movie. Heck, I actually heard of TZP only last week.
    4. A children’s film? Don’t think there is anything daring about it. Look for Roadside Romeo, daring to venture into animation. Funnily enough, you don’t look at it as daring.
    5. You don’t know if Aamir was invited on Koffee with Karan. I mean, a man of his limited diction might have been a misfit on that show and so was probably not even invited.
    6. “Stupid Dime-a-dozen award shows”, but he does go to the “American” Oscars. Self-loather?
    7. I agree he started the trend of “looking the part”. But hasn’t the audience already grown tired of it and started calling it a “gimmick”? I guess you still have not. The smarter ones will wait for you.
    8. He has no labels coz he is not worthy enough, maybe? Just a thought, think about it. Well, think.
    9. Didn’t Salman shave his head for Tere Naam? Get out of Aamir-dome.

Despite all this, there is one thing that stands out in your article – Mangal Pandey more than once??? Am really sorry for your misery. Hope you take all this the right way, didn’t want to be this harsh but you leave me with no choice. A little more research, a lot more brain and you are set for your next post.

Amit, it is all personal opinion and I am not cross that you don’t agree with me. It is all just a choice. Good luck to you Nitesh mate. One thing you do understand here is that I posted here coz I liked what I read. And going by your post, I assumed it wouldn’t get down to calling names. I am disappointed, but hey its your blog and you da man. It is completely my problem that I tend to equate this to childishness.

There will be a time, when you grow older perhaps, that you will realize that you could take some time off and calling people names is quite petty. This is again not an insult, please do not take it so. If you try to rid your posts of all the name-calling, it will definitely read much better. Good luck to you.

But I am keeping Bala’s post up in true Aamir spirit.

Bala, dude.. one thing I’ll say, it is extremely childish to criticize someone, illogically that too, when he/she is being praised. You come here and belittle each of the achievements I have attributed to Aamir.. that’s not done mate.. There is a time and place for everything. Hope you’ll realize it some day too.

Its amazing to see aamir khan going to highlight different issues not like other actors who are just after girls in their movies.
I think AAmir khan should make a movie highlighting the issue of Aids as well and also a movie showing problems of people who are neither males nor females .As they have got no respect in our sub continent society.

Very well written, Nitesh. Aamir also happens to be my favourite Bollywood actor at the current time because of the very things you pointed out.

Not to nitpick, but Kamal Hasan *did* shave his mug for that psycho-trippy movie of his (I forget the name, but he has a dual-role in it)…

    Keep up the good work!

    Hi Nitesh,

I came across your blog today…by chance. All your posts are fascinating to say the least. You have got an amazing gift of expressing your opinion. I am myself a die hard AK fan. I debate his histrionics with my friends on a regular basis, how out-of-the-box actor he is and stuffs.
Today while going through your posts(yes I actually spent almost the whole day reading ALL your posts…and even the comments that followed…and I don’t regret that), I was surprised to see a person share the majority of my views regarding ‘AK’ and the ‘RESTS’ and the run-of-the-mill shits they churn out year after year. But the way you articulate your thoughts is simply awesome! You put forward so many points but never really mess up the plot, which remains as tight as… wateva ;)
I wish my writing skill was as good as yours. Your style of writing is very urbane but at the same time original and ingenious. Instead of being over the top and harsh you can send your message by the use of wry wit. Also you don’t limit yourself to any particular style – from the conversation-type review(sic) of Sawariya to the directors’-take of TZP to this open letter, you experiment and that’s what I like about you, because ‘repetition’, to me, is death and any true-blue AK-fan knows that well!
hmmm… you have impressed me to the point of actually taking the pain to write something on your blog, and considering the sort of lazybones i am, that’s a remarkable achievement in itself! So add me in to the ever-growing fanbase of yours and keep up the good work…you absolutely rock man. Looking forward to your next ‘release’.
